A good warm up is vital
to prepare the body for exercise. An ideal warm up time is between 5 and 10 minutes. If the weather is cold and you are outside it can take
slighlty longer. You are looking to elevate the heart rate which will send more oxygen to the parts that
you are moving. If you warm up to quickly then the body will struggle to cope with the extra demands so
take it slowly and give the heart and lungs time to adjust.
Once you feel warm and comfortable you can
increase the pace until you reach your comfortable pace. It is now time to continue with your programme so do
not stop for longer than 15 - 30 seconds otherwise the heart rate will start to drop and the warm up effect
reduced.
