Resting Heart Rate - RHR

The average RHR is 72 bpm (beats per minute).

Generally if your RHR < 60 bpm you have a very good aerobic (CV fitness) base. This is not always the case as other factors such as drugs, hereditary conditions and a low body temperature can also contribute.

The best time to take a reading is on waking up in the morning. It is also a good indicator of general health as if it differs by > 5 bpm it is entirely plausible that you are a little under the weather so care is needed if training. Heart Rate watches are useful tools because they also show if there is a potential virus in your body or over training. If you wear a watch and whilst training you find yourself straining to reach a heart rate you could reach easily then it is time to rest.
